To be recognized as Steve Correll, the guitar
     player, not Steve the Rational.

Steve is a study in paradox. As Gilbert and Sullivan would say, "Things are seldom as they seem: skim milk masquerades as cream. Steve appears to be easygoing, simple, full of fun, and somewhat dumb. He is always the clown with his infectious laugh and his natural ease at creating humor. It therefore comes as a great surprise to people when they discover that Steve is actually intense, highly motivated with al-most fanatical ingrown beliefs of right and wrong, and not only as sensitive in his way as Scott, but also capable of an instant and decisive grasp of the real nature of something. Steve' s camouflage of the ordinary, not too bright, but highly person-able young man works brilliantly. it is difficult to see Steve as the clown, and then suddenly see Steve the dedicated musician, and to accept them both as the same person.

Music, and more especially, his guitar, is the basis of Steve' s existence. He has that unique genius of creating brillant and highly emotional music charged with a strange love and joy of living. To hear Steve play the guitar when he is fully enveloped in it, to watch him rocking back and forth, eyes closed, head nodding, is to share for a few moments an inner glimpse of a very private paradise. In Steve' s hands, a guitar becomes an instrument of sound, a stimulator of emotions, and a carriage for transportation into another dimension of awareness. Steve also has a knack for hearing strange and highly intricate chords. His writing, while somewhat limited by his lack of orthodox musical education, is nevertheless highly charged with a life and brillance of its own.

Steve is a slave to emotion, and feels deeply. He loves strongly, and conversely, hates strongly. He is both fiercely loyal and cruelly contemptuous. He is also capable of the most tender and the most savage of actions, and is consumed with an urge to understand and know. Far from the dummy he pretends, Steve has a razor sharp mind. At the same time, he is capable of actually and sincerely enacting a task in the dumbest possible way. Steve is very much the absent-minded professor, and comes a very close second to Terry in his incredible ability to forget what he was just told not to forget. In truth, however, it usually turns out that what he forgot was something unpleasant or contrary to Steve' s own ideas, and he has the most remarkable memory in regards to those things pleasant and desirable to his tastes. One could almost accuse Steve of selective dumbness, but he carries it off with such natural good humor and impish grin of his that you can't help but grin, shrug your shoulders, and let him get away with it again.

One had better be pretty sure of oneself before matching wits with the incorrigible Correll. Steve also tends to be the most stubborn and dead set in all his ways of all The Rationals. When he makes up his mind, you needn't confuse him with facts. They won't do a thing to alter his decision. But, at the same time, through the care-ful use of illogic and verbal runaround, you can talk Steve into almost anything. It doesn't really make sense, but at the same time, neither does Correll, which is probably why he is one of the most frustrating and demanding friends a person can have, but at the same time, one of the most beautiful.
