By William R. BrennanClub Heidelberg, Ann Arbor THE CLUB HEIDELBERG CROWD WAS IMPATIENT as rumors of a Rationals reunion were tossed about. The house was packed early, giving the Volume Whores one of the larger opening slot audiences they are likely to inherit. Their Stones-influenced R&B flavored rock & roll was the perfect fare for the generally older crowd. The V.W. double-barreled Strat attack was greatly appreciated by the Morgan crowd. The only blemish on their otherwise inspired performance was the bass player, who kept asking the crowd to buy the band some drinks. Yeah, right. According to the flyers, the Scott Morgan Band was due next, but that proved to be a false advertisement. Not that anyone cared, as the hoped-for Rationals reunion became reality. Scott Morgan took the stage with his old bandmates for the first time in twenty-three years, and gave the thirty and forty-something crowd what they wanted. A rundown of their'hits'included 'Barefoogn', 'Hold On Baby, 'I NeedYou, and of course 'Respect, all played with youthful vigor. Their set was surprisingly tight, considering they haven't played regularly for nearly two decades. The audience, needless to say, ate up the forty-five minute set like junk food, and actually seemed disappointed when the real Scott Morgan Band took the stage. |
THE RATIONALS REUNION w/ THE MIKE KATON BAND May 11 - Club Heidelberg - Ann Arbor By: Donna Wiitola The Webster's Definition of Rock: Popular music usually played on electronically amplified instruments and characterized by a persistent, heavily accented beat. If Webster had been with us at The Heidelberg on May 11 to experience The Mike Katon Band and the reunion ofthe Rationals, he may have defined rock a bit more like this. Rock: The joining together of a large group of people (mostly with nowhere to sit) who for a brief moment in time become one family. That is the feeling that was in the air this night. People putting differences aside, color, creed, race and religion becoming unimportant. People being, kind to one another and going out of their way for each other. Sharing one main cause. The cause of rock and roll. Watching guys like Scott Morgan and Mike Katon do their thing on stage this particular night was a breath of fresh air. Everyone there did their best to make it happen. And you know what? It did. Mike Katon rocks and The Rationals live! DW |
